Commander Shepard Destroy by Gigi-FenixPhoenix Commander Shepard Destroy by Gigi-FenixPhoenix
So this is my third installment of the Shepard Series. I think this ending is for those who chose to fight and go out with a bang. It's Shepard staying true to her nature, ending the war in her own terms once and for all.

This ending also represents what the Reapers and the Catalyst say and think of organics: Chaos. This is raw and uncontrolled chaos. Yet, within chaos there's also excitement and raw beauty. As the song from Europe "Flames" says: "we are born to self destruct, here we go again. A desire to go down in flames."

*I also did a second part to this which is Regrets, showing Shepard surviving.

Destroy Ending is the only ending in my book.

Trying to Control the Reapers is a disaster waiting to happen.

"Synthesis" is...an atrocity; an inexcusable violation of every specie's free will based on half-baked ideals.

Destruction? That GARUNTEES the Reapers are gone forever, life--TRUE life--remains as it should be, and Shepard gets a REAL victory over the evil of the Reapers.

Reapers aren't "evil", they seek to preserve life and save the living species (in their way)
Destroying them means deleting the essence and the memory of thousands of species and civilization, existed over the millennia ... is the largest genocide ever conceivable.
Only a Shepard full renegade can choose this option.

Nope. They ARE evil--they destroy species as part of some arbitrary "cycle" and hold themselves as superior to ALL life. Destroying them is AVENGING everyone they've destroyed and purged, NOT "deleting their memory".

A=A.

It's like saying "children are evil because they destroy millions of sperm to be born"
Is clearly explained that the purpose of the Reapers is to preserve life, not to destroy it: civilizations are born, grow and eventually collapse, is the natural order of things.. but the intervention of the Reapers prevent them from being lost, their essence and memory is made eternal
It is debatable whether this solution is acceptable or not, but it certainly is not "made for evilness"

It's like saying "children are evil because they destroy millions of sperm to be born".

 ...No. Children don't SET OUT to kill those unused sperm, and they don't justify it with arrogant boasting about being higher forms of life.

It's BECAUSE of the Reapers that civilizations are lost! They "preserve" nothing, they only destroy because of their notions of superiority.  Civilizations they wipe out are left with barely any ruins and remnants to be MYTHS. Extermination is NOT preservation.

their essence and memory is made eternal

Yeah, but only for the Reapers, so the point is moot. The rest of the galaxy has little or no idea the previous civilizations (or the Reapers themselves for that matter) ever existed in the first place.
So much for "preventing them from being lost".

Yes it is.

"It's BECAUSE of the Reapers that civilizations are lost!"

Those civilizations would have disappeared anyway, this is the conclusion at which the Original AI arrives  after checking the data of the galaxy

"They "preserve" nothing, they only destroy because of their notions of superiority."

If the Reapers wanted destroy, all life would disappear from the universe of ME millions of years ago
Reapers are synthetic beings that follow a single directive: find a way to preserve life
They do not act "for arrogance", in fact, they have no choice, they are obliged to follow the program with which they were created

"Extermination is NOT preservation."

This applies to the exterminations operated by humans, but we are not talking of these
The Reapers finish a race only for create a new form of life from this: a lifeform eternal, and in possession of memory and knowledge of this race

"Yeah, but only for the Reapers, so the point is moot. The rest of the galaxy has little or no idea the previous civilizations (or the Reapers themselves for that matter) ever existed in the first place.

In the real world the rest of the galaxy has no idea about the human history and culture, so human history and culture are worthless and wasted ..?

"Yes it is."

I have never seen a "evil" character who spontaneously, without coercion, give at his victim the power to destroy him and erase all that it has accomplished so far; simply saying "if you think that our solution is not good, we will respect your decision"

Those civilizations would have disappeared anyway, this is the conclusion at which the Original AI arrives after checking the data of the galaxy.

And that makes it okay? That makes no sense at all. Just because the civilizations MIGHT have died out by other means does NOT, in ANY way, shape, or form, justify the Reapers wiping them out. A = A!

If the Reapers wanted destroy, all life would disappear from the universe of ME millions of years ago...

And risen again, then destroyed once it reaches a certain pojnt, in a cycle...which IS what **already happened** countless times before.

Reapers are synthetic beings that follow a single directive: find a way to preserve life They do not act "for arrogance"

"Against us, you are nothing." -- Soverign.
Sounds pretty arrogant to me. Those who "have no choice" rarely boast about their power.

This applies to the exterminations operated by humans, but we are not talking of these
The Reapers finish a race only for create a new form of life from this: a lifeform eternal, and in possession of memory and knowledge of this race.

Wrong. This DOES apply, because it's basic sense. Wiping a civilization out is NOT "preserving their memory and knowledge" by and sane definitin of those words. It's the OPPOSITE, **by definition.** And since all said knowledge and memory is pretty much ONLY know to the Reapers, while everyone else remains ignorant, any talk of "preservation" holds no water.

And considering that the new life forms will just be swept away themselves by the Reapers eventually....any creation they preform loses all merit.

"in the real world the rest of the Galaxy has no idea about the human history and culture, so human history and culture are worthless and wasted...?

Strawman. Ad hominem. Not what I said or meant.

I have never seen a "evil" character who spontaneously, without coercion, give at his victim the power to destroy him and erase all that it has accomplished so far; simply saying "if you think that our solution is not good, we will respect your decision""

Yes, you have. Mostly due to contrived writing.

This has me in tears, the description, my current music (John Dreamer "True Strength"), the colours and determination in your Shep's face. Out of the three options, Destroy will always be my Shep's canon. She's a Renagon, and as you've said, ends the war on her terms. Thank you for this wonderful piece, it symbolises all Destroy!Shepard stands for. Finality.

Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the Shepard Files as well. I do still have to finish that one and do the last piece for Commander Shepard Series, but I've been overwhelmed with work and have had little time and energy to draw or write fandom. Anyways, thanks for letting me know you enjoyed it!

TIM and Anderson manifest two different endings though Synthesis and Refusal represent other pathways. Still in the end the decision is Shepard and even in that it seems a staggering call for one life deciding the fate of trillions.

I don't think it would be an easy call. Or rather, it shouldn't be that easy. Which is where Refusal comes to play. Refusing the starchild and his choices and just carving another path (though that path ends with the destruction of everything).

So really it is like saying should I be the one to condemn all life in the galaxy to keep them from becoming Reapers in time, do I control the Reapers, do I destroy the Reapers, or do I force an evolution to negate the purpose of the Reapers? Never an easy call - Shepard's journey has been full of hard calls - still ages later - Shepard is a legend though children who grow up hearing about the Shepard - none of them will know the real story though their own stories are likely to be ones of hard calls too. Maybe not as many as the Shepard yet there we are faced with Shepard's hard calls.

This is my favourite ending, simply because I think it sums up the tone and feel of the Mass Effect series as a whole and has the fewest plot holes or unfortunate implications. Plus I just love Hackett's closing speech. This is the galaxy winning and restoring itself without relying on either the Reapers or space magic.

Although like everyone I agree with one thing: the death of the geth and EDI sucks serious backside. I wouldn't be surprised if Bioware just tacked it on out of the knowledge that, without it, nearly everyone would choose Destroy.

I know what you mean. This seems to be the path that Shepard would take (more so, if you have chosen plenty of renegade options), yet it's a bittersweet victory. If it was only EDI that died, it would suck, but at least it would have been one life. However, having the entire geth (who had just become your allies) wiped out is another thing! Plus, you pretty much made Legion's sacrifice be for nothing, which is what got to me the most. Otherwise, yeah, this would be the closest thing to a perfect ending.

That's a fair point. It seems that no matter how you look at it, all the finales have pros and cons. I guess they wanted to have it like real life, where there's really no perfect decision or path or anything. :)

Yeah I know. I'm so bad... I MOSTLY picked the destroy ending cause Shepard survives at the end xDD. Also because I wanted to blow up the freaking Reapers. But if Shepard could survive synthesis i might have used that even though I don't like the idea at all >.>
