~~~~~~~~~~
Hello!
So, I know I've disappeared. Life has been crazy and I'm in the process of trying to open my new agency, which means lots of work and little free time. Never the less, I am working on my last piece of the Shepard Series. I have to thank all of those who are following me and those who have faved my work. I wish I could go and thank each and every one individually, but alas! Time is not on my side.
Anyways, just noticed I'm close to 50,000 pageviews! As a result, I'm offering a comission for my 50,000 visitor. Please send a screenshot if you're the one and I'll be happy to draw/paint something for you!
Thank you and good luck!
Alright, so here's a second feature of badass female characters in videogames! Representing the RPGs section Part II, in no particular order, here they are: (Btw, if you have any suggestions of other kickass characters that represent the female gender, feel free to comment.)
I. Mitsuru Kirijo [Shin Megami Tensei Persona 3 & Persona 4 Arena] / PS2 :: PS3 :: Xbox
She's first introduced in Persona 3, as Gekkoukan High School's valedictorian and the student council president.  She used to be the leader of S.E.E.S. until the MC joins and 'dethrones' her. Nevertheless, she becomes MC's second in command due, in great part, to her natural leadership skills.
In Persona 4 Arena, Mitsuru has become the head of a special operation unit called the Shadow Operatives. She's an expert in fencing (still able to call forth a persona to vanquish shadows) and doing business. Additionally, she's cunning enough to navigate the political stage, securing the aid of anyone to enable her success. Her intelligence, elegance and wit makes her a force to be reckoned.
II. Yuffie Kisaragi [Dirge of Cerberus] / PS2
She originally hails from Final Fantasy VII, where she's presented as a thieving ninja; young and clumsy, and hard to take seriously. In Dirge of Cerberus (which follows the story of Vincent Valentine) however, Yuffie is reintroduced as the  "The Rose of Wutai". She has not only grown stronger and more mature, but she has become an active soldier in the WRO (led by Reeve Tuesti) and sobered up considerably --enough to take her seriously, without detracting from her comedic mischief. Though Yuffie's not the main character, none can argue that the nimble skill and outstanding speed of this ninja makes her one badass chick.
III. Lyndis [Fire Emblem 7: Rekka no Ken] / Game Boy Advanced
Lyndis is one of the three main characters of the game. She's eighteen years old at the start of the game and a female lord. Lyn was born in the Sacaen Plains after her parents, Hassar (chieftain of the Lorca tribe) and Madelyn (daughter of Lord Hausen of Caelin) were killed by bandits prior the beginning of the game. Since her parents eloped, Lyndis didn't know of her heritage and believed she was merely the daughter of the chieftain of a dead tribe. Lyn lived on her own until she came upon a tactician (your character) lying unconscious. This fateful meeting would trigger the series of events that would lead Lyn down a path to become stronger in order to protect her mother's lands and avenge the Lorca tribe.
IV. Marisa [Fire Emblem 8: Sacred Stones] / Game Boy Advanced
Is an aloof, renowned mercenary known as the "Crimson Flash" (for her speed with the blade). She seeks to surpass her father and become the greatest swordmaster in the land. "My father placed blunt swords at my sides when I slept to keep me from moving," she explains in one of her supports, giving us a taste that her childhood was no ordinary run in the park. Though you meet her as an enemy, you're able to convince her to join your side, becoming a powerful until in your growing army. Outside of fighting, she's pretty clumsy but rather than subtract from her awesomeness, it enhances it, making her more human and, thus, less perfect.
V. Lucina [Fire Emblem 13: Awakening] :: 3DS
From the newest FE series comes Awakening, wherein Lucina is introduced. She's the daughter of the main character (Chrom) who comes back from a bleak future to try to avoid the apocalyptic disaster that led to the deaths of her parents and friends. In her timeline, living is all about surviving. Days are measured by endless battles, as the world around her and her ragtag group burn to ashes. This tragedies not only made her tough, but sharpened the bite of both sword and tongue. Despite all her suffering, she's not without hope. Lucina shows that she hasn't lost the ability to love, form attachments and simply enjoy the pleasure of living. That makes her badass.
VI. Shenna [Tales of Symphonia] :: PS3
Sheena is a shinobi from Mizuho, sent to assassinate Sylvarant's Chosen of Regeneration (Colette Brunel, Love Interest of the protagonist). As the story progresses, you discover that Sheena is not all what she seemed, especially a cold assassin. Instead, she's hot-blooded, clumsy and reckless. You also find that rather than create mayhem, she's actually trying to save her people by destroying Colette, exposing a gentle and naive side to her.
Without a doubt, Sheena is skilled, tough and strong. But she also possesses an innocent charm that makes her likable and vulnerable. She lacks confidence when it comes to making big decisions, but once she's set her mind on something, she won't be stopped. Sheena becomes a close ally after she joins forces with the main group to save an innocent village that had given her refuge. From there on, her help would become invaluable.
Second blog/feature about Badass Female Characters that represent the gender proudly. Though I haven't finished the videogame features yet, I wanted to switch back and forth between different categories to make it more interesting. For those who recommended some females on the last post, do not worry, I'm still compiling different list and you shall see them soon.
     That said, these are six badass characters from various anime. Again, they are not in any particular order and, I am aware, there are many more characters that I have not included, but I might do so in the future. So, if you have any suggestions feel free let me know via comments.
I. Riza Hawkeye [Full Metal Alchemist]
     I know Full Metal Alchemist has plenty of kick-ass women. In fact, I know some would not agree that Riza is the toughest of the bunch. However, there's a reason why I picked her over the rest and that is because she doesn't have any skill in alchemy. Yes, that's right, despite not using alchemy she still manages to hold her own in a battle alongside all the alchemy users. Her skills and supports have even proven invaluable in numerous occasions.
     Riza Hawkeye is in her middle twenties and has already become an officer in the Amestrian State Military. She works under Colonel Roy Mustang and becomes his personal bodyguard/nanny. A sharpshooter and firearms specialist, Lt. Hawkeye is an invaluable asset to the Colonel's team --treated as Roy's right hand in and outside the office. At some point in the series, Riza demands Roy sacrifices her life in order to avoid him becoming corrupted by alchemy. This even was hard proof of her courage and commitment. No matter what's said about her, Riza Hawkeye is a bloody queen of the battlefield.
II. Revy [Black Lagoon]
     Though Black Lagoon is filled with awesome female fighters as well, Revy is still at the top. Admittedly, I wasn't too sure about her at first. I mean, she looked like a girl come out of a guy's wet dream. So my initial judgment was that she was simply that: a walking fan-service with a potty mouth. I couldn't have been more wrong, though.
     Now, Revy isn't the perfect heroine, in fact she would be the worst role model out there. Let's start by saying this series wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. The characters are all complex shades of gray and Revy is no exception. In fact, Revy would be a dark shade of gray since she's pretty indifferent to people's struggle and she wouldn't normally go out of her way to save an innocent (unless that person is Rock).
     Revy is a mercenary true and true. Her harsh past makes her a cynical woman who likes to smoke, drink, cuss and takes life one day at a time. She also possesses superhuman skill when it comes to fighting. She can dodge bullets, has perfect shooting and is even a fearsome demoness in hand-to-hand combat. Few can stand against her and live to tell the tale. Due to her ambidextrous marksmanship, she's nicknamed "Two Hands" by the denizens of Roanapur and respected by the majority the crime lords. Revy ends up becoming something like the unofficial bodyguard of the latest addition to their group, Rokuro "Rock" Okajima, who becomes the brain of their operations. Her attraction to him, however, is as complex as her story. Though she's aware of the darkness inside of her, she cannot help but be pulled by the light that is Rock, who fights against his own corruption and stands unstained in a sea of poverty.
III. Morgiana [Magi]
     Morgiana may not be the strongest character of this new series, in fact she hasn't even gotten a djin (lamp genie) of her own. Instead, she got a household vessel, which means she might never be a candidate for Queen herself. She's also not an ambitious character, her only wish is being useful to her friends (Aladdin and Alibaba) and support them through their struggles.
     Regardless, she hails from the Fanalis, a clan of the strongest warriors of the dark continent. Unfortunately, her life wasn't one of glory. When she was a child, she was capture and slaved. She barely remembers her parents, doesn't know if she has siblings, and the home she cherishes is but a hazy dream. She was mistreated by owner, enslaved both physically and psychologically by his cruelness.
     Even when she's set free, Morgiana still struggles with her past as a salve, holding onto it even as she tries to let it go. Her growth as a character is nevertheless undeniable. Morgiana is an expert in hand-to-hand combat and has the strength to lift ten grown men without breaking a sweat. All in all, the potential for her to become a force to be reckoned with (even more than she is now) is indisputable and therefore she makes it to the list.
IV. Kou Shuurei [Saiunkoku Monogatari]
     So she's probably the character that would stand out the most in this list because she isn't your typical badass character. In fact, she doesn't really fight per se. So why include her? Well, because her intelligence, wit and determination makes her a person to behold and to be wary of.
     Though she's only sixteen, she became the first female official in the Imperial Court --passing the exam with the third highest score, obtaining the title of "Tanka" (which is a feat all by itself). She later becomes co-governor of the Brown Province (which was going through a rough period) and manages to bring peace and prosperity to the place --though she sacrifices her position to do it. Kou Shuurei's battlefield is therefore the world of politics and her strength lies in her strategic mind and creative thinking. She may not be physically strong, but hell, she commands enough grunts to do that work for her! She has the brains, the looks and the ability to bring an Emperor to his knees and that makes her pretty badass!
     *BTW, I have to add a memorable quote from the anime that helps understand this character. When Kochou--an influential courtesan of the red district-- gives Shuurei her first make up kit and helps her put it on, she says this: "Makeup is a woman's battle armor, because when a woman wears makeup, she won't allow herself to cry." (I may be paraphrasing a little).
V. Tsunade [Naruto]
Alright, so I stopped watching this series a long time ago. Right around the time the filler episodes started happening (after Sasuke is taken). Still, I've included her because my first impressions were that she was one badass woman. Never mind that she casually disregards her work and drinks during office hours, she is strong in combat and is at the top when it comes to medicine. I remember that even Orochimaru was scared of her and, hey, if she can become Hokage and command a bunch of really strong men, that means she's the boss, right? Therefore, she makes the list!
VI. Blasa [Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit]
     Probably my favorite character out of the whole list. Balsa is a skilled warrior who was forced to escape her hometown, the land of Kanbal, when her father was declared a traitor. At the beginning of the series, she is 30 years old and a bodyguard-for-hire.
     As the story progresses, you find that she's really fighting not for money, but to atone the sins of Jiguro --the warrior who saved her and raised her as family when she was just a child. Jiguro (who owed her nothing, but who couldn't just stand watching her be executed for a crime she didn't even commit) was forced to kill eight of his friends in order to save her. Though he never blamed her and accepted the cost, Balsa knew part of him regretted what he'd done. In payment for all his suffering, she promises him on his deathbed that she will save eight lives in exchange for those he sacrificed.
     As a result, Balsa is pragmatic, mature, tough and intelligent. But she's also kind and gentle when needed be. At the start of the series, Balsa is asked by the Empress to save her son the Prince Chagum, who is about to be executed because he's possessed by a spirit thought to bring disaster. Despite the dangers, Balsa ends up in the shoes of Jiguro, raising and protecting a child that is not her own. A child that represents the eight live she has sworn to save.
** I have not included any characters from Avatar because I consider those cartoons. I'll feature them when I do a cartoon feature.
So, I decided to deviate a little from my usual features and make this one more like a blog post with featured artwork. I don't know about you guys, but lately I've obsessed with finding strong female characters that would represent our gender proudly.
To do that, I've combed through different mediums (videogames, literature, visual novels/otome games, manga, anime, tv series) within our pop culture and, let me tell you, it has been quite challenging. Females are still mostly portrayed according to molds to serve no purpose other than:
a) being a love interest (little development and not critical to the main plot. She's just there to keep the main character company) ,
b) support the main lead (that's her only goal and dream. It doesn't matter if he treats her bad (in fact it's almost encouraged) because she will insist on chasing him until he change his mind. Has little to no self-respect),
c) fan-service/eye candy (fights in her underwear while the guys have the full protection of armor. The more level she gains, the less armor she's given. She's also well doted, because apparently exercise doesn't make you lose your bosom in a made-believe world),
d) needs to be protected (damsel-in-distress scenario. The mission is to rescue her, so you hear little about her),
e) she's a damn robot (she's some kind of AI or weapon with whom the main lead falls in love with. Her strength, however, is only because she's a machine. And even then, sometimes the guy still has to save her).
So, that said --written?-- here are some gems that I've found within a sea of coal. These are six badass characters from various RPGs that can hold their own against any guy, and who do a great job of representing our gender. They are not in any particular order and I'm aware there are many more kickass characters that I have not included, but I might do so in the next feature. If you have any suggestions feel free to comment.
FEATURE
I. Commander Jane Shepard [Mass Effect Triology] / PC :: Xbox :: PS3
She is the heroine of the series. Her background is customizable and so is her personality. She can be a commanding bitch or a charming leader depending on your choices. She fights at the front of the line, not only in the battlefield but also, when she needs to, in the intricate field of politics. An N7 soldier turned ambassador for peace, beacon of hope and queen of war, her mission throughout the series goes beyond personal gain. She fights in defense of the earth, for the feature of the galaxy and would allow no one and nothing to stand in her way.
II. Elly Van Houten [Xenogears] / PS
Though she is not the main character, she is the co-star. She's a young officer of Gebler who operates a powerful robot/mecha. She encounters Fei (the main character) early in the game and --despite their differences-- decides to help him out. She is a character that remains strong and true to herself throughout the entire game (never losing her power and becoming your typical damsel-in-distress). This game was actually one of the first I played and she became one of my favorite characters. Years later, I still remember how strong she was and how well she represented our gender.
III. The Warden [Dragon Age Origins & Awakening] / PC :: PS3
The Warden is a character a little like Commander Shepard. You're in charge of determining her name, background and race, as well as her personality through your choices (though not as well defined as Sheppard). She becomes a gray warden and takes it upon herself to lead the war against the darkspawn. She gathers a group of unusual allies along the way. If played correctly, she can earn the loyalty of her companions and become a respected, competent leader. From beginning to end, the warden maintains her prowess in battle and, in so doing, determines the fate of the entire continent.
IV. Tifa Lockhart [Final Fantasy VII & Advent Children] / PS :: Movie
Though she was a supporting character in FFVII and wasn't as fleshed out as I would've wanted, the potential for bad-assness is still there. You might come to see this a little more with the movie Advent Children (which is a sequel to the game). Tifa Lockhart is not only beautiful, kind-hearted, positive and strong, she is also one of the first females I played that broke the mold of being the "sweet, rose-colored healer" of the party. The fact that she doesn't mind getting down and gritty with hand to hand combat is what sets her apart and makes her a warrior to behold.
V. Alicia Melchiott [Valkyria Chronicles] / PS3
For some reason this game is still vastly unnoticed, which is a shame considering it has an amazing story, entraining game play (strategy based), incredible art and extremely lovable characters. The story plays like a book with two main characters: Welkin Gunther (Commander of Squad 7) and Alicia Melchiott (Sergeant of Squad 7, and therefore, Welkin's second in command). They are both part of the militia and are given missions that end up earning them fame and reputation. Unfortunately, it also earns them the jealousy and scorn of the regular army. Alicia's class is a scout, which means she can run fast and rarely gets hit. She remembers little of her past and fights only because she feels she must. Though she can be sweet, she proves, time and again, that she's not to be taken lightly. As the story progresses, you find that there's a lot more to her than meets the eye and she becomes key to defending the small country of Gallia.
**BTW, there's an anime about this series as well. It follows the game very close, but it's told from Alicia's perspective and it adds a small love triangle between her, Welkin and Faldio.
VI. Tear Grants [Tales of Abyss] / PS3
Tear may not be the main character of Tales of Abyss, but she isn't just a support character either. She plays an important part of the story which goes beyond just helping out Luke (the main character). She is a Seventh Fonist in the military wing of the Order of Lorelei. She lost her parents when she was still an infant, and has been raised as a warrior ever since. This makes Tear's personality different from other typical female characters. Rather than sweet and dumb, she is calm and reserved, making her seem cold at first. However, as you get to know her, you find she has a rather innocent side to her as well. She is polite and respectful to all, particularly to those in positions of authority, but has a secret weak spot for cute things.
